How Dressing Helped me Become More Confident

Since I was a little girl I loved dressing up. Whether it was a puffy Cinderella dress and plastic high heels or picking out my outfit for school, it was always something that made me happy. I can vividly remember playing dress-up with my little sister and even though we are older I don't think that is something that will ever change. Growing up I attended Catholic school and always wore a uniform. But we would have frequent "Dress Down Days" which were of course my favorite. You would usually find me shopping the night before to find the perfect outfit. Receiving compliments on my outfit was always a confidence boost for me when I was younger and it still is. But, oftentimes it's not the compliments that you remember but the criticism.
Some things stick with you especially when you are young. I can remember multiple instances where girls commented on my body, or boys made fun of me at school, and how that had a long-lasting negative effect on me. But I found it didn't affect me when someone would comment negatively on what I was wearing. At times I am my own worst enemy and can be very judgmental of myself. I found something I would never judge was what I was wearing. It didn’t matter to me if someone didn't like my outfit, it is really something I have always felt confident in.
My own personal style is something that I love about myself and I am able to express myself through what I wear. While I may not always be confident in other aspects of my life I have learned that a good outfit has made me feel better. I am also constantly inspired by the people around me and how they dress. I truly feel that clothing can give you confidence and make you feel good about yourself. I also found that it is important to dress for yourself and no one else.
Clothes really can make someone happier and more confident. According to stylist.com, article "Dressing for Happiness" fashion psychologist Shakaila Forbes-Bell says: “When you wear clothes that make you feel confident, happy and empowered, they can act as armour, shielding you from negative feelings and experiences.” I agree with this statement and feel I have realized this as I have gotten older.
Putting on an outfit that makes me happy each day is a small act of self-love that has helped me to become a happier and confident person.
